Types of Articles

Inkwell Innovations in Life Sciences (IILS) welcomes a variety of article types to cater to the diverse needs of the scientific community. Here are the major types of articles that IILS accepts:

  1. Original Research Articles
  • Description: Detailed studies reporting novel research findings. These articles include comprehensive methodologies, data analysis, and discussion of the results.
  • Content: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion, References.
  1. Review Articles
  • Description: Summarize and synthesize existing research on a particular topic, providing an overview of the current state of knowledge and identifying future research directions.

Article Format

Authors submitting manuscripts to Inkwell Innovations in Life Sciences (IILS) are required to adhere to the following format guidelines. Each section of the article should be clearly structured to facilitate understanding and review by readers and reviewers alike.

  1. Title
  • Provide a concise and informative title that accurately reflects the content of the manuscript.
  • Avoid using abbreviations or jargon that may be unfamiliar to readers.
  1. Abstract
  • Summarize the key objectives, methods, results, and conclusions of the study.
  • Keep the abstract brief, typically between 150-250 words. 
  1. Key words
  • Include relevant keywords to improve discoverability in databases.
  1. Introduction
  • Clearly state the research question or objective of the study.
  • Provide background information to contextualize the research and highlight its significance.
  • Briefly review relevant literature to establish the gap or need for the current study.
  1. Materials and Methods
  • Describe the materials, equipment, and procedures used in the study in sufficient detail to allow replication.
  • Clearly outline the experimental design, including any controls and statistical methods employed.
  • Include information on ethical considerations and approval, if applicable.
  1. Results
  • Present the findings of the study in a logical sequence.
  • Use tables, figures, and graphs to summarize and illustrate the data.
  • Provide sufficient detail to support the conclusions drawn from the data.
  1. Discussion
  • Interpret the results in the context of the research question and objectives.
  • Compare and contrast findings with relevant literature.
  • Discuss the implications of the results and their significance for the field.

  • Summarize the main findings of the study.

  • Provide information on funding sources that supported the research.
  1. Conflict of Interest
  • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest that may have influenced the research or its interpretation.
  1. Author’s Contribution
  • Specify the contributions of each author to the study.
  1. References
  • List all sources cited in the manuscript using a consistent citation style (e.g., APA, MLA).
  • Ensure that references are accurate, complete, and up-to-date.
  1. Supplementary Materials
  • Include any additional materials or data that support the findings of the study.
  • Provide clear instructions for accessing or using supplementary materials, if applicable.

Authors are encouraged to consult the submission guidelines for specific formatting requirements and instructions on manuscript preparation. Adhering to these guidelines will help ensure that your manuscript is properly formatted and ready for review by the editorial team and peer reviewers at IILS.

 

Text Format

Please ensure that your manuscript adheres to the following formatting guidelines:

  1. File Format: Manuscripts should be submitted in Word format.
  2. Font and Size: Utilize a normal, plain font such as 12-point Times New Roman for the main text.
  3. Emphasis: Italicize text for emphasis where necessary.
  4. Page Numbering: Enable the automatic page numbering function to sequentially number the pages.
  5. Field Functions: Avoid the use of field functions within the document.
  6. Indents: Use tab stops or appropriate commands for indents instead of relying on the space bar.
  7. Tables: Create tables using the table function within Word, rather than using spreadsheets.
  8. Equations: Employ the equation editor or MathType to present equations accurately.
  9. File Saving: Save your manuscript in either docx format (Word 2007 or higher) or doc format for compatibility with older Word versions.

 

Table Format

  1. Table Numbering: All tables must be numbered using Arabic numerals.
  2. Citation in Text: Tables should be cited in the text in consecutive numerical order.
  3. Table Caption: Each table should be accompanied by a descriptive caption (title) that explains the components of the table.
  4. Reference to Previously Published Material: If any components of the table have been previously published, provide the original source as a reference at the end of the table caption.
  5. Footnotes: Any footnotes related to the table content should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters or asterisks and placed beneath the table body for clarity.

 

Figures Format

  1. Figure Numbering: Number all figures using Arabic numerals.
  2. Image Quality and Format: Ensure that figures are of high quality and resolution, preferably in TIFF format.
  3. Citation in Text: Figures should be referenced in the text in consecutive numerical order.
  4. Figure Parts: If a figure consists of multiple parts, denote them using lowercase letters (e.g., a, b, c).
  5. Appendix Figures: If figures appear in an appendix, continue the consecutive numbering from the main text. Figures in online appendices (Supplementary Information, SI) should have separate numbering.
  6. Figure Captions: Each figure must have a concise caption that accurately describes its contents.
  7. Submission Method: Submit figures within the body of the text. Only if the manuscript's file size becomes an issue should large figures be submitted separately.
  8. Copyright Permissions: If using figures previously published elsewhere, obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both print and online formats.

 

Citations Format

Use ACS citation style and preferably use some reference manager such as endnote for inserting citations. Here is the description of different types of citations.

Authorship Criteria 

Inkwell Innovations in Life Sciences (IILS) adheres to internationally recognized standards for authorship to ensure fair and accurate attribution of credit. Our authorship criteria align with the guidelines of leading scientific journals and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). Authors are required to meet the following criteria:

  1. Substantial Contributions: Authors must have made substantial contributions to:

    • The conception or design of the work.
    • The acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data.
    • Drafting the manuscript or revising it critically for important intellectual content.
  2. Drafting and Revising: Authors should actively participate in drafting the article or critically revising it for significant intellectual content, ensuring the quality and integrity of the manuscript.

  3. Final Approval: Authors must approve the final version of the manuscript before submission. This approval confirms that all authors agree with the content and conclusions presented.

  4. Accountability: Authors should be accountable for all aspects of the work. This includes ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

  5. Ethical Compliance: Authors must comply with ethical standards in research and publication, including guidelines for the ethical treatment of human and animal subjects, and ensure the manuscript meets these ethical requirements.

  6. Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their work is original and has not been published elsewhere. Multiple submissions of the same manuscript or redundant publications are strictly prohibited and will result in rejection.

Additional Guidelines:

  • Corresponding Author: The corresponding author is responsible for managing the submission process, correspondence during peer review, and communication with the journal after publication. This author ensures all authors have reviewed and approved the final manuscript and agree to its submission.

  • Contribution Transparency: IILS encourages detailed disclosure of each author’s specific contributions to the research and manuscript preparation. This promotes transparency and accountability.

  • Acknowledgment of Non-Author Contributors: Individuals who contributed significantly to the work but do not meet the authorship criteria should be acknowledged in an appropriate section. This includes technical support, writing assistance, or other contributions.

  • Changes to Authorship: Changes to authorship, including additions, deletions, or reordering of authors, must be approved by all authors. Requests for changes after manuscript acceptance are discouraged and are considered only under exceptional circumstances with editor approval.

By adhering to these authorship criteria, IILS ensures that all contributors receive proper recognition for their work and maintains the integrity of the research and publication process. These guidelines promote a collaborative and ethical research environment consistent with the highest standards of scientific publishing. We strictly enforce our policy against multiple submissions and redundant publications to uphold the quality and originality of the research we publish.

 

Animal and Clinical Studies

For studies involving experimental animals, the Methods section must affirm adherence to internationally recognized principles for laboratory animal use and care. These principles may include guidelines outlined in documents such as the European Community guidelines (EEC Directive of 1986; 86/609/EEC) or the US guidelines (NIH publication #85-23, revised in 1985).

Investigations involving human subjects must declare in the Methods section that the research adhered to the guidelines outlined in the Declaration of Helsinki and Tokyo for human studies. Additionally, approval from the institutional human experimentation committee or equivalent authority must be obtained, along with documented informed consent from participants.

The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject papers if there are any concerns regarding the appropriateness of the animal or human procedures utilized.

 

Article Submission Process 

Step 1: Registration and Login

  1. Register: Visit the https://inkwellliterature.com/  select journal by clicking on the journals thumbnail and click on the "Register" link to create a new account or Login if you have already created an account. Please use instructions for user ID and Password selection.
  2. Login: Once registered, log in to your account using your username and password.

Step 2: Start a New Submission

  1. Submission Link: After logging in, navigate to the "User Home" and click on the "Make a Submission" and then “Make a New Submission” link to begin the submission process.

Step 3: Submission Checklist

  1. Enter The tile: Enter title in title box.
  2. Submission Checklist: Ensure that your submission complies with the IILS guidelines and check off each item in the submission checklist. And check the acknowledgement box.
  3. Privacy Statement: Read and acknowledge privacy Statement and click on the Begin Submission

Step 4: Enter Metadata

  1. Title: Enter the title of your manuscript.
  2. Keywords: Provide relevant keywords to help index your article for search purposes. Please note that press ENTER after typing or pasting individual keyword.
  3. Abstract: Provide an abstract summarizing your research. Click on Save for later or Continue

Step 5: Upload Manuscript, Figures and Supplementary Files

  1. Manuscript File: Upload the main manuscript file in Word format (docx or doc) containing all tables and figures by clicking on Add file or upload file. Select either Article Text or other (if its is other than main manuscript, like figures, supplementary data or cover letter). You can add more files by clicking on add files again and again after uploading the previous file and selecting the type of file.
  2. Figures and Tables: Upload any figures, tables, or supplementary materials separately if they are too large to include in the main manuscript file. Click on Save for later or Continue

Step 6: Add Contributors/authors

  1. Adding Contributors or Authors: The person uploading the manuscript is automatically added as first author. You can add more authors by clicking Add Contributor again and Again until all authors are added.
  2. Order and Primary Contributor: after adding all authors one by one, you can change the order by clicking on the order button. You can choose any authors to be set as primary/corresponding author by clicking set primary contact. Click on Save for later or Continue

Step 7: Comments for Editors

  1. You can add any comments for editors, that may be for including or excluding any reviewers or anything regarding the manuscript being submitted for publication. The editors will consider the comments on merit. Click on Save of later or Continue

Step 8: Confirm Submission

  1. Review Details: Carefully review all the entered information and uploaded files to ensure accuracy.
  2. Submit: Click on the "Save for Later or Submit" button to complete the submission process. You will receive a confirmation email acknowledging receipt of your submission.

Step 9: Track Submission

  1. Submission Dashboard: Log in to your account to track the status of your submission through the OJS system. The dashboard will show updates on the review and publication process.

Step 10: Respond to Review

  1. Reviewer Comments: If your manuscript undergoes peer review, you will be notified via email. Log in to your account to view and respond to reviewer comments.
  2. Revisions: Upload revised versions of your manuscript as requested by the reviewers and editors.

Step 11: Final Decision and Publication

  1. Final Decision: Once the review process is complete, you will receive a final decision email. If accepted, your manuscript will proceed to the production stage.
  2. Publication: The final version of your article will be formatted and published in the upcoming issue of IILS. You will be notified once your article is live.

Step-wise Peer Review Process of Articles 

Step 1: Initial Submission Check

  1. Receipt Confirmation: Upon submission, you will receive an email confirming the receipt of your manuscript.
  2. Preliminary Review: The editorial office conducts an initial check to ensure the manuscript adheres to the journal's submission guidelines and policies.

Step 2: Editorial Review

  1. Assignment to Editor: The Managing Editor after receiving the submission evaluates and if he feels necessary, assigns the submission to any editor in the editorial board otherwise send for review directly.
  2. Suitability Assessment: The editor assesses the manuscript's relevance to the journal's scope and its potential interest to the readership.

Step 3: Peer Review

  1. Reviewer Selection: The editor selects independent experts in the field to review the manuscript.
  2. Review Process: The selected reviewers evaluate the manuscript for its scientific quality, originality, methodology, and clarity.
  3. Reviewer Reports: Reviewers submit their reports and recommendations (accept, minor revision, major revision, or reject) to the editor.

Step 4: Editorial Decision

  1. Review Synthesis: The editor reviews the peer reviewers' comments and recommendations.
  2. Decision Communication: The editor makes a decision and communicates it to the author. Possible outcomes include:
    • Accept: The manuscript is accepted as is or with minor revisions.
    • Minor Revisions: The manuscript requires slight modifications before acceptance.
    • Major Revisions: Substantial changes are needed; the manuscript may undergo another round of review.
    • Reject: The manuscript is not suitable for publication in the journal.

Step 5: Revision Process

  1. Author Revisions: If revisions are requested, the authors revise their manuscript in accordance with the reviewers' and editor's comments.
  2. Resubmission: The revised manuscript is resubmitted through the OJS system.
  3. Re-evaluation: The editor or reviewers re-evaluate the revised manuscript, if necessary.

Step 6: Final Acceptance

  1. Acceptance Notification: Once the manuscript meets all requirements, the editor sends an acceptance notification to the author.
  2. Copyediting: The manuscript undergoes copyediting to ensure clarity, coherence, and adherence to the journal's style guide.

Step 7: Proofreading

  1. Proofs Sent to Author: The formatted manuscript proofs are sent to the author for final approval.
  2. Corrections: The author reviews the proofs and submits any corrections.

Step 8: Production and Publication

  1. Final Formatting: The manuscript is finalized and formatted for publication.
  2. Online Publication: The article is published online in the upcoming issue of IILS.
  3. Notification: The author is notified of the publication, and the article becomes accessible on the journal’s website.

Step 9: Post-Publication

  1. Promotion: The article is promoted through various channels to increase visibility and reach.
  2. Indexing and Archiving: The article is indexed in relevant databases and archived for long-term access.

Publication Fee/Charges Policy 

Open Access Policy

Inkwell Innovations in Life Sciences (IILS) is committed to disseminating high-quality research widely and freely accessible to the global scientific community. All articles published in IILS are open access, ensuring maximum visibility and citations for our authors’ work.

Prime Motto

Our prime motto is to disseminate the latest scientific knowledge in life sciences. Our purpose is not to earn money from IILS. However, to meet web charges, pay for indexing services, and compensate the dedicated individuals working at IILS, we must implement reasonable article processing charges for the articles published.

Article Processing Charges (APC)

To cover the costs associated with the peer-review process, editorial activities, and maintaining the journal's high standards of quality, IILS applies Article Processing Charges (APC) as follows:

  • For Authors Outside Pakistan: The APC is set at $100 USD per article.
  • For Authors from Pakistan: The APC is set at 10,000 PKR per article.

No Additional Fees

We believe in transparency and fairness in our publication process. Therefore, we do not charge any additional fees beyond the APC:

  • No Submission Fee: There is no fee for submitting your manuscript to IILS.
  • No Processing Fee: We do not charge any processing fees during the review phase.
  • No Additional Fees: There are no hidden charges for color figures, supplementary files, or any other services.

Fee Waiver for 2024

To encourage high-quality submissions and support the research community, IILS is pleased to announce that the APC is waived for all articles submitted and accepted for publication in the year 2024. This means that there will be no charges for authors submitting their manuscripts to IILS during this period.

  • Higher Citations: Studies have shown that open access articles receive more citations compared to subscription-based articles.

Current Financial Support

At present, all expenses associated with the operation, management, and publication activities of IILS are fully covered by Inkwell Innovations Publishing Company. This includes costs related to:

  • Website Maintenance: Ensuring the journal’s online platform is functional, user-friendly, and secure.
  • Indexing Services: Paying for services that index our journal to enhance discoverability and accessibility of published articles.
  • Editorial and Review Processes: Compensating the dedicated team of editors, reviewers, and support staff who ensure the quality and integrity of the journal.
  • Operational Expenses: Covering miscellaneous costs such as software licenses, administrative expenses, and other operational needs.

Revenue Sources

In addition to our internal funding, IILS generates revenue through various sources to support its operations and initiatives. These revenue sources include:

  • Author Fees: A nominal article processing charge (APC) is applied to papers published in IILS from outside Pakistan. For articles submitted from Pakistan, a reduced APC is applied. These fees contribute to the sustainability of the journal and support its open-access model.
  • Institutional and Organizational Support: Financial support from academic institutions, research organizations, and other entities may be received to sponsor specific initiatives or projects of IILS.
